The arrival
The start of a new life in Copenhagen, how exciting is that? In the beginning I wanted to do so many things that I couldn't even figure out what to do first. I decided to arrive 2 weeks before my internship started so that I could get familiar with my surroundings and the city I will be living in. I found out where the supermarkets are, the metro station, Turkish stores etc. I found everything I needed so that I would be comfortable and not all over the place.
GAME (company internship)
After having so many meetings with my coach online, I was excited to see him in person. I arrived at the location comfortably with the metro and got to see everyone at the office. I got introduced to the people I will be seeing the most and will be working with just when I arrived. I got myself a laptop and I could sit anywhere at the office if it's available and it was very comforting to watch them give so much trust and comfort to me, it was truly very welcoming. At lunch I saw the rest of my co-workers and we went around introducing ourselves while simultaneously eating our food.
After around a week at the office, I got to start on projects that were assigned to me by my coach. The first week was just purely focused on me getting to know the team and what I will be doing. My projects would mostly consist of supporting anyone with IT support, finishing projects my coach gave me and making projects for myself as well. I started off light and worked my way up. I was first uncomfortable and felt like the tasks that were given to me were too easy and didn't learn much. But after a month or so I saw that my coach just wanted me to get comfortable with the office work and see how I performed. As my last project for the company I built an entire website for them to use for their future projects, it was truly a wonderful experience.
Life and culture
Living in Copenhagen is a very difficult and loud life. It was hard for me to get used to it at first, but I got used to it eventually after a couple of months. The amount of noise that is outside, how expensive everything is, theft etc. I got my bike stolen while living in Copenhagen because I wasen't careful enough, that is a big tip I'll give you if you're planning on coming here: watch out for everything and make sure everything is safe and secure. The money issue is also something you just need to be prepared in advance, everything here is more expensive then in the Netherlands. Grocery shopping is where it hurts me the most whenever I go out to buy something, it's almost a 20% increase on all products. If you have to do this for months, you better prepare yourself well so that you don't end up with money trouble.
Make sure you also prepare yourself beforehand to do all of the legal and government work for your stay here in Denmark. You have to make yourself a temporary Danish citizen, set your address here and much more. Do your own research on this, It's very tedious but necessary.
The culture here in Denmark is basically the same as in the Netherlands. The people you meet are friendly, without so many friendly people around I would never know how I would survive in this place. Coming here alone was very difficult, but the people here made it an amazing experience. I got help and tips on almost everything I did. Make sure you communicate and get to know the people around you, so that you always have people to rely on even to this day. I'll never forget the people that helped me when I needed them the most.
Back to Netherlands
Going back to the Netherlands felt so weird, but after arriving here I realised how much going international has changed me. I feel like I have gotten more self dependent, more confident and learned so much just from my trip alone. Thank you for giving me this chance and I hope to see myself doing more things like this. Thank you for reading.
